=== Map formats ===
=== Download maps ===
Currently (spring version 0.75b1) spring supports 2 map formats: SMF and SM3.
For download links look at the [[Getting_Spring_Content_and_Links|Content and Links page]].

SMF format is older and most maps are still in that format. SM3 is a newer and a better format, but there's not so many maps available yet in this format.
===Install maps===
Maps are ".sd7" or ".sdz" files. To install this files move them into (Unix) ~/.spring/maps or (Windows) "My Documents\My Games\Spring\Maps".
As is the case with games, use the "Reload maps/games" option from the "Tools" menu in SpringLobby.

As a player, you don't need to care about formats, but if you want to make maps yourself, you need to choose.
===Choosing a Map===
Technically, all Spring games ''work'' with any Spring map. In practice, '''some maps are unplayable with certain games.''' For example a game where you mine resources from the ground will only work on maps where these resources are present. A game based around land combat will not be very fun on a water map.
This is why some map makers started adding prefixes to the map names, to signal what games work well with their map.
This is no official list, only a recommendation what to look out for. '''Generally it is best to have a look at the games webpage if a map pack is offered or even already included in the download.'''

All spring maps can be found on [http://spring.unknown-files.net/category/13/Maps/ Unknown Files]. There, you can either browse the map list, or just type part of the map name to the Quick Search editbox on the right. Ok, forget browsing, Quick Search owns. If you make your own maps, upload them to UF if you want others to be able to play them.

====Kernel Panic====
Maps are either .sd7 or .sdz files. You just need to download them, and put them into C:\Program Files\Spring\maps\ on windows, or ~/.spring/maps/ on linux.
most maps have "kernel panic" mentioned in their description (searchable by lobbies)
If you don't use the default directories, you can also figure out where to put them. Do not try to unpack the files, the game might not see them then.
has a map pack: http://springrts.com/wiki/Kernel_Panic#Download_links
If you are already in battleroom, TASClient has a 'reload map list' button that you can press, so you don't need to quit/rejoin at all.

After getting a new map, next time when you start TASclient, it will cache some information about the new maps, and it takes some time. For the same reason, the next time you run spring itself, it's going to spend some time to update it's maplist. And finally, when you actually play a new map the first time, spring caches pathing information for that map, and this will take some time.

TIPS:

A useful tip, on almost every map in a 1v1 you will start opposite your opponent unless you choose your position. this is because random order simply randomly distributes players at the default start points which in almost every map are opposite each other. One exception that I know of is flooded desert where you both start on the left hand island.

Install maps

Maps are ".sd7" or ".sdz" files. To install this files move them into (Unix) ~/.spring/maps or (Windows) "My Documents\My Games\Spring\Maps". As is the case with games, use the "Reload maps/games" option from the "Tools" menu in SpringLobby.

Choosing a Map

Technically, all Spring games work with any Spring map. In practice, some maps are unplayable with certain games. For example a game where you mine resources from the ground will only work on maps where these resources are present. A game based around land combat will not be very fun on a water map.
This is why some map makers started adding prefixes to the map names, to signal what games work well with their map.
This is no official list, only a recommendation what to look out for. Generally it is best to have a look at the games webpage if a map pack is offered or even already included in the download.
